Angiomas

What are angiomas?
Angiomas and haemangiomas are benign tumors of the skin originating from small blood vessels. They may vary in size from 1 mm to several cm and in color being red, purple or blue. The exact cause of angiomas is unknown, but there may be a genetic factor that makes certain people more likely to get them. They’ve also been linked to pregnancy, oral contraceptive pills, age and liver diseases.

What do angiomas look like?
„Spider angiomas“ are vascular malformations which can be seen on the face, lower eyelids, cheeks, nose and forearms. „Cherry angioms“ are bright red, circular or oval shape, and small—ranging in size from a pinpoint to one-fourth of an inch in diameter. Some cherry angiomas appear smooth and even with your skin, while others appear slightly raised. Cherry angiomas are common skin growths that can grow on most areas of your body, and they are usually found on people age 20 and older. Bleeding can occur if the angioma is scratched, rubbed, or cut open. „Venous lake“ generally appearing on lips and is blue in color. Childhood haemangioms may be present at birth or appear briefly after birth.

How are angiomas treated?
In our clinic we use the most effective, fast and relatively painless removal methods which are laser removal and radiofrequency coagulation.
Some angiomas seen in babies and children may be treated by beta blocker medications.

Is anesthesia needed?
When treating larger angiomas anesthetic may be injected beneath the angioma for a more comfortable treatment for the patient.

How long does a treatment take?
Several seconds to minutes are needed for every angioma depending on size.

How many treatments are required?
In most cases one treatment is adequate. If there are larger angiomas or a childhood haemangioma multiple treatments may be required.

How to take care of the skin after the treatment?
Keep the treated area dry for at least 12 hours.
Apply an antibiotic cream two times a day for 10 days.
Avoid touching the scab which will form as it will come off on its own.
You may resume your daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Can angiomas reappear after removal?
Not on the same areas, however if you have a tendency or other risk factors new angiomas may appear.
